With the ever increasing need in today’s world for green energy and environmentally friendly sources of power, a world without oil is becoming more and more of a real possibility. But what happens if it doesn’t quite work out? What if we never relieve our dependence on oil, and as oil becomes more scarce, countries will fight wars over it? This is the exact premise of the classic thriller, “Mad Max,” starring Mel Gibson.
Our fable begins out after some upsetting confrontation in some undetermined time in the future. Petrol is at an sheer premium, and is protected carefully. Society is just barely held together by systematic law enforcement. Our champion, Max, is one of these law enforcement officers. His job is an “Interceptor,” to stay on the fringes, and catch up with criminals who assume they have runaway from the law.
We see a few scenes early in the movie where Max shows his driving abilities, his decent ethics, and his strong character. He is a family man, and a loving husband and father. It is a humiliation that such a kind family has to grow up in such a horrific environment.
We are also introduced to a goofy posse of outlaws, who wander what they call the “wasteland,” which is outside of normal society. In this world, it is slaughter or be murdered, and the only things you get are the things that you appropriate. There is no law, and there is a assorted band of outlaws that roam the roads and steal gasoline from whatever source they can.
It is when a few of these unruly road gangsters come up against Max’s relations that he gets his name. These outlaws hunt down and kill Max’s wife and his child. When they do this, they set free a crazy killer in Max whose character has been described since time immemorial. Somebody who has been changed from an average Joe, into a exceedingly able killer in search of only one thing. Vengeance on those who have wounded him.
And this is the core of the film. The first part is all build up. The foreword of the society in which Max lives, the prologue of his personality, his character, his abilities as a driver and a police officer. Just before the mishap, he is shown a particularly advanced car that has an extraordinarily prevailing engine. Max turns it down, and decides to practice a quiet life with his family. But when they get his family, he turns his back on any hope of a normal life, and heads to the road.
One by one, he hunts them down and kills them. In one last scene that is particularly harrowing, he shows just how callous and violent he has become.
