Congratulations on your interest in learning Japanese but you should be aware that this is one of the harder languages to learn. The challenge lies in understanding the pictograph form of alphabet and an entirely different form of grammar that you may be used to. Usually new Japanese learners are intimidated by the language until they become more accustomed to its workings. What you need to focus on when learning a new language are the strategies and the learning process that is responsible for your progress; when you do this you can take a hard to learn language like Japanese and turn into the new language that you speak. Here are some of the most popular hints to help you learn this new and challenging language.

Consider how you are most comfortable learning. Some people learn best by simply listening and writing things out phonetically. You may, however, be someone who wants to start out by learning how to write out the characters of the alphabet. You are, however, better off sticking with one method or the other, as you have to familiarize yourself with this new way of both writing and speaking. If you try to learn both at once, you will probably just confuse yourself and make learning Japanese much harder than it already is. Just choose your course of study based on how you learn best.

Read Manga. These books known as Manga are Japanese graphic novels; many have been translated into English and other languages. By reading and following along as best you can, you get great practice reading in Japanese. Japanese writing goes from the back of the book to the front, and from right to left; by reading these books you’ll start to become accustomed to this style as well as what all the characters and sentences mean. Reading in your language can also help your comprehension of common slang and current word usage. You can learn some things by taking classes and formal lessons, but it’s also good to become immersed in everyday culture. Manga are often very adult in theme, something you should keep in mind when buying them!

One trick you can use to speed up your learning process is to use any Japanese recordings or downloads at times when you are not focusing on learning. It’s great to listen and study while you are consciously trying to learn, of course. Another good way to learn, though, is by taking advantage of subconscious learning, which can be just as effective. Let your vocabulary lessons play in the background as you drive to work, do chores around the house or even as you shop. Letting yourself hear the words and phrasing over and over again will do wonders for your learning. You may be surprised at how much you can recall from these sessions! Taking this a step further, you could also try having the programs play while you are asleep!
